Pot created by

J-K Habbershaw

In December 2022, John-Kenneth D Habbershaw and Courtney W Hollyoake (two friends and retired emergency service volunteers) will undertake an unassisted 3000-mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny 17ft sailing boat to raise money in aid of their four favourite charities.

This page has been set up specifically to help raise funds and pass them directly to our chosen charities. Donations on this page will be split evenly between our listed charities. Any donations to this page will not be used towards the costs of the voyage.

If you donate £5 or more, we’ll include your name printed on the boat hull as part of Poppet’s ‘Sofa To Sailboat’ logo!

> The 3000-mile crossing will be east to west from the Canary Islands to Antigua.

> The boat will average 3.5 knots per hour (4mph), a fast walking pace.

> The trip across the Atlantic will take about 30-35 days.

> The largest waves can measure up to 20ft-40ft high – That is higher than the boat mast!

> At its deepest, the Atlantic Ocean is 5.28 miles (8.5km) deep! There is no toilet on board – the crew will use a bucket!

> ‘Poppet’ is an early MK1 ‘Leisure 17’ made from fibreglass by Cobramould in Essex. The boat is around 50 years old. ‘Poppet’ measures just 17ft (5.2m) long – that’s smaller than a Ford Transit van!

> The boat fully provisioned will weigh about 850kg. That is about half the weight of a large family car.

> John Adam sailed his L17 ‘Eve’ across the Atlantic in 1969. He was arrested and briefly imprisoned in Cuba on suspicion of being a spy!

> Get involved with some of the fundraising events which are being planned.

> The costs of preparing the boat, equipment, extra safety training, and logistics are being met personally by the crew or from sponsored/donated equipment, but there is still a long way to go!
